Massachusetts, a state with a Democratic trifecta, has the power to protect vulnerable groups and resist the Trump administration and MAGA Republican agenda. The budget reconciliation bill increased I.C.E.’s power, making it the largest domestic law enforcement agency. I.C.E.’s overreach is causing fear, family separations, due process violations, inhuman detentions, and worsening community disruptions. These effects will intensify—especially in sanctuary cities—as plans are underway to add 10,000 new agents and expand detention facilities. But we demand limits on I.C.E. overreach and a balanced approach to public safety.
