Who Governs the Governor’s Council?
March 19 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm EDT
The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts, (LWVMA) and Who Governs the Governor’s Council (WGGC) cordially invite you to a legislator and community briefing: Who Governs the Governor’s Council? on Thursday, March 19 at 11:00 AM in the Senate Reading Room at the State House.
This event launches Who Governs the Governor’s Council (WGGC), an organization dedicated to educating voters on the Governor’s Council, what it is and does, why it is important, as well as how we can all play our part in this critical but little known and long-standing part of government. As you know, the Governor’s Council, an elected body that exists in only two states, approves nominees to the Judiciary – the branch of government that ensures our rights, enforces our laws – and approves Parole Board nominees. WGGC encourages the electorate to learn about the role of the eight elected members who determine the hundreds of judges appointed to the bench.
We will also highlight the importance of passage of S.497/H.805, An Act clarifying the role of Governor’s Councillor on the ballot, sponsored by Senator Barrett and Representatives Cataldo and Gentile.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Senator Mike Barrett
- Billy Corriher, State Courts Manager, People’s Parity Project
- David Harris, Co-Founder, Who Governs the Governor’s Council, Emeritus Managing Director at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute at Harvard Law School
- Thomas Koonce, Director of Violence Prevention, Center for Teen Empowerment, Inc., who earned a commutation in 2022
- Jean Trounstine, Co-Founder, Who Governs the Governor’s Council, Professor, Author
- Jesse White, Interim Deputy Director, Prisoners’ Legal Services of Massachusetts
Join us on Thursday, March 19 at 11:00 AM in the Senate Reading Room, to learn the importance of the Governor’s Council and how you can get involved.
