SUMMARY:Who Governs the Governor's Council?
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts\, (LWVMA) and Who Governs the Governor’s Council (WGGC) cordially invite you to a legislator and community briefing: Who Governs the Governor’s Council? on Thursday\, March 19 at 11:00 AM in the Senate Reading Room at the State House.  \n\n\n\nThis event launches Who Governs the Governor’s Council (WGGC)\, an organization dedicated to educating voters on the Governor’s Council\, what it is and does\, why it is important\, as well as how we can all play our part in this critical but little known and long-standing part of government. As you know\, the Governor’s Council\, an elected body that exists in only two states\, approves nominees to the Judiciary – the branch of government that ensures our rights\, enforces our laws – and approves Parole Board nominees. WGGC encourages the electorate to learn about the role of the eight elected members who determine the hundreds of judges appointed to the bench.  \n\n\n\nWe will also highlight the importance of passage of S.497/H.805\, An Act clarifying the role of Governor’s Councillor on the ballot\, sponsored by Senator Barrett and Representatives Cataldo and Gentile. \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers include: \n\n\n\n\nSenator Mike Barrett\n\n\n\nBilly Corriher\, State Courts Manager\, People’s Parity Project\n\n\n\nDavid Harris\, Co-Founder\, Who Governs the Governor’s Council\, Emeritus Managing Director at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute at Harvard Law School\n\n\n\nThomas Koonce\, Director of Violence Prevention\, Center for Teen Empowerment\, Inc.\, who earned a commutation in 2022 \n\n\n\nJean Trounstine\, Co-Founder\, Who Governs the Governor’s Council\, Professor\, Author\n\n\n\nJesse White\, Interim Deputy Director\, Prisoners’ Legal Services of Massachusetts\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, March 19 at 11:00 AM in the Senate Reading Room\, to learn the importance of the Governor’s Council and how you can get involved.

SUMMARY:Justice 4 All Thursdays
DESCRIPTION:Greater Assabet Indivisible Network (GAIN) invites you to stand in solidarity with immigrants and resistance to ICE and their cruel and lawless detention of our neighbors Thursdays from 11am-1pm. Regardless of any other political views\, you are welcome to join us and demand Justice 4 All so long as you do so non-violently. \n\n\n\nOur friends at Bearing Witness have been hosting gatherings at this location for many weeks. We are an unaffiliated group\, but very much aligned with their values and mission. Our goal is to add to the total number of hours that citizens stand in non-violent opposition to the deplorable detainment conditions at this location. If you have been to Bearing Witness on Wednesdays\, we would love to have you at Justice 4 All Thursdays. \n\n\n\nSchedule \n\n\n\n11:00-11:30 Welcome; music; announcements11:30-12:30 Stand with signs along District Ave12:30-1:00 Optional short march down to Mall Rd. \n\n\n\n\nJoin the Email List\n\n\n\nRead past Substack articles\n\n\n\n\nWeather \n\n\n\nAll attendees are ultimately responsible for making their own decisions about travel.  The organizers are going to use the following guidelines to modify or cancel events in advance.  A sudden change in conditions just before or during events\, such as a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning\, could happen and organizers will do their best to communicate any decisions appropriately. \n\n\n\n\n\nNo change to event:Normal to heavy RainWindy\, but no warningsLight snow on ground\, but not falling \n\n\n\nCancel:Burlington schools cancelledTemp/Wind Chill < 20FStorm advisory with snow or high wind predictedFreezing rain falling or predicted \n\n\n\n\n\nShorten event in advance\, limit to standout:Temp/Wind Chill < 30FTemp Ok\, but ground wetDeep snow in grassy area\, sidewalks clear \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens at this ICE office? \n\n\n\nICE personnel depart from District Ave. in unmarked vans with tinted windows on missions to abduct immigrants across New England. Immigrants may also show up at the office for appointments. The facility on District Ave was never intended to be a detention center\, yet immigration lawyers and media interviews reveal that people are now being housed here in conditions that have been called “abysmal” and “unsanitary.” \n\n\n\nWhat to expect at Justice 4 All? \n\n\n\nWe are committed to nonviolence\, and we stand peacefully with signs outside the facility. We do not block the entrance\, we do not physically approach ICE agents as they walk to/from the parking lot\, and we do not block traffic on District Ave. \n\n\n\nSigns \n\n\n\nThis is a very targeted action outside the ICE facility\, so it’s not the venue for protesting other causes. Even though we care deeply about other issues\, while outside ICE we must remain focused on immigration.  \n\n\n\nParking and other tips \n\n\n\nFor parking\, please use the Macy’s overflow lot (75 Burlington Mall Road\, follow signs for Macy’s\, see map). For those with mobility challenges\, please keep in mind that the lots closest to ICE — the FAA lot beside ICE and the BAE Systems lot directly across the street from ICE — have both been blocked off. There are restaurants nearby (Clover\, Pressed Cafe\, Chipotle) to get food and use the bathroom. Before arriving\, please consider your own self-preservation (citizenship status) and self-care (sunscreen\, hydration\, etc.). \n\n\n\nIf you would like to receive updates on Justice4All Thursdays and reminders of our events\, please add your email below to join our list. We’re excited to reinforce the work of our friends at Bearing Witness and to support our immigrant neighbors. We hope that you will join us. \n\n\n\nSee you in Burlington! \n\n\n\n~Justice4All Thursdays organizers and the Greater Assabet Indivisible Network

SUMMARY:MA voters approved a legislative audit. What's blocking it?
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Massachusetts voters approved a ballot question that affirmed that the State Auditor has the right to audit the legislature. The ballot question won every town and city in Massachusetts\, passing with 72% of the vote statewide. Since becoming Massachusetts state law\, the question has instead become a conflict between political insiders. Legislative leaders continue to claim that the ballot question is unconstitutional. The State Auditor Diana DiZoglio has sought to bring the question to court to allow her office to proceed with the audit. The state’s Attorney General Andrea Campbell\, who must represent constitutional officers\, has neglected to take a position on the audit\, leaving the question in legal limbo.  \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, members of the public are left wondering: what happened to the audit we voted for?  \n\n\n\n\nGet Zoom Link\n\n\n\n\nJoin Act on Mass on March 19th for a webinar to investigate this question. Where do the various sides stand on the audit? What is the legal precedent here? We will be joined by former appellate lawyer and federal and state prosecuter Jeanne Kempthorne.  \n\n\n\nJeanne Kempthorne is a retired attorney and mediator. In her 40-year legal career\, she practiced as a civil litigator at the firm Hill & Barlow before joining the US Attorney’s Office as a federal prosecutor where she served in several roles\, including chief of the public corruption unit. After her federal service\, she practiced in the areas of criminal defense and habeas corpus\, and served as a State Ethics commissioner\, chief of appeals and general counsel for the Berkshire District Attorney’s  Office\, and a special assistant district attorney in the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office’s conviction integrity unit. A longtime good-government activist\, Kempthorne co-authored The Massachusetts Legislature: Democracy in Decline (2021) and the 2025 update Democracy in Decline: Denial and Delay. In 2025\, she was invited to testify before the State Senate subcommittee on the constitutionality of the law clarifying that the State Auditor has the power to audit the legislature.

SUMMARY:From Moscow to MA: Reflections on Ordinary People Standing Up to Power
DESCRIPTION:Please join True North Action Alliance Boston\, the newest Indivisible group in the Boston community\, for our inaugural event welcoming Rebecca Riccio of the Boston Trainers Collective! \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for exact address\n\n\n\n\nRebecca Riccio is well known to many people in greater Boston as a social change educator\, social justice activist\, and safety lead and trainer for several of the city’s largest street actions since 2018. Her own training in the work of resistance began decades ago when she was a student in Moscow during the Cold War. Around the kitchen tables of political\, religious\, and artistic dissidents\, she learned how ordinary people can find the courage to stand up to power through the strength of their convictions\, communities\, and appreciation for the simple joys of everyday life. Rebecca will discuss how she taps into the wisdom shared in those Russian kitchens decades ago to make sense of what is happening in the U.S. today and help others find courage in challenging times. \n\n\n\nA core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
