SUMMARY:Resistance Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our current presidential administration seems intent on erasing critical aspects of American history\, both historic injustice\, and the struggles for freedom and democracy that are parts of our past. Led by community member and friend of the store Bob Van Meter\, the Resistance Book Club will read works that tell important parts of that history.   \n\n\n\nThe book club will meet on the third Friday of the month at 10:30 AM here at the store. Join the resistance book club at The Silver Unicorn bookstore on Friday April 17th at 10:30 AM as we discuss our second book\, Lady Justice by Dahlia Lithwick. \n\n\n\nIIn Lady Justice\, Dahlia Lithwick\, one of the nation’s foremost legal commentators\, illuminates these many heroes of the Trump years. From Sally Yates and Becca Heller\, who fought the Muslim travel ban\, to Roberta Kaplan\, who sued the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville\, to Stacey Abrams\, who worked to protect the voting rights of millions of Georgians\, Lithwick dramatizes in thrilling detail the women lawyers who worked tirelessly to hold the line against the most chaotic presidency in living memory.

SUMMARY:Standout for Democracy | Protest in Methuen
DESCRIPTION:This a local Indivisible event! Our standout is comprised of a group of seniors who decided to do more than watch the news\, become upset\, anxious\, and feel powerless about what is happening in and to our country. We began a peaceful protest action to register our displeasure! We wanted to demonstrate in a way that empowered us and allowed us to take back some control and voice our concerns. Our motto is “WE MARCHED THEN\, WE MARCH NOW.” Since we range in age from the 70s to 90s\, we try to standout on Fridays from 1pm to 2pm. We standout weather permitting so we would not standout in the rain or snow. We are looking forward to warmer weather. We are glad to be a part of Greater Methuen Indivisible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister for Updates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

SUMMARY:JFK Students and Allies March to De-ICE Citizens Bank
DESCRIPTION:You may have heard about the inspiring JFK Middle School students that staged a ICE OUT walk-out last month. Now they have joined the campaign to De-ICE Citizens Bank! \n\n\n\nJoin us on Friday\, April 17th to march with student activists from JFK to Citizens Bank via the bike path. We’ll start at 3:10 at the end of the path\, march for an hour to Citizens Bank on King Street\, then hold a rally from approximately 4:15 -5:15. The rally will be held on sidewalk in front of Stop and Shop (Citizens Bank has a branch inside Stop and Shop). \n\n\n\nYou can join the students for all or any part of this. March with them for a bit. Join them at 4:15 at the bank. Or do the whole thing! \n\n\n\nThe students will make some brief remarks at the rally\, and present the De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition with something to bring to bank headquarters on 4/23 as we protest outside the annual shareholder meeting. \n\n\n\nSend Citizens Bank a clear message: financing private prison and immigration detention facility operators The GEO Group and CoreCivic is bad for business. \n\n\n\nPlease only bring signs specific to this action: De-ICE Citizens Bank; Cages Aren’t Communities; Citizens Bank – Stop Financing ICE Prisons; Citizens Bank + ICE = Human Rights Abuse; ICE Prisons Don’t Strengthen Our Communities; Citizens Bank- Cut Ties With ICE Prisons; etc. We’ll have some extras too. \n\n\n\nNotorious private prison companies The GEO Group and CoreCivic are being called on to be part of an unprecedented expansion in capacity as part of the Trump administration’s mass detention\, deportation\, and surveillance policies. \n\n\n\nTo accommodate the planned increase in detention capacity\, GEO and CoreCivic must undertake expensive construction and renovation projects. Since 2019\, though\, most of their lenders have cut ties with the two companies\, which have faced allegations from forced labor to securities fraud. \n\n\n\nStart at bike path from Bridge Road Florence. End at Citizens Bank at 228 King Street Northampton (Stop and Shop Plaza). Join for any or all of this! \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for updates\n\n\n\n\nCitizens Bank has instead deepened its relationship with the private prison industry\, taking on new roles in financing both CoreCivic and GEO\, all while continuing to tell their customers that they’re focused on strengthening our communities. \n\n\n\nWe won’t quietly stand by as Citizens continues to finance the private prison & ICE detention companies that are harming our communities. The 2019 exodus of banks from the industry in response to activism should be a reminder to us that our voices matter. Now it’s time to use them. Visit www.de-icecitizensbank.org for more information. \n\n\n\nA core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. We expect hosts to ensure all participants in your event uphold this commitment. We recommend all participants review our safety and security resource before your event: https://indivisi.org/safety.
