DESCRIPTION:Among the many questions likely to appear on the November 2026 ballot are two that would result in ruinous revenue loss\, at the very moment state finances are challenged by unprecedented cuts in federal funds and programs. If passed\, these ballot initiatives will \n\n\n\n\nReduce the MA personal income tax rate from 5% to 4%\, thereby cutting at least  $5B annually (more than ten percent of total annual tax revenues) from the funds needed to pay for everything our state government provides; and\n\n\n\nRadically rewrite the state’s tax-cap statute (“chapter 62F”) in a manner that will shrink available state revenues by additional billions of dollars in a volatile and irrational manner. \n\n\n\n\nOur panel of experts\, Phineas Baxandall\, Director of Research and Policy Analysis at the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center\, Jessica Tang\, President of the American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts (AFT) and Peter Enrich\, Professor Emeritus\, Northeastern University School of Law will discuss the initiatives\, who sponsored them and who opposes them\, their fiscal impacts\, and what we can do to defeat them. John Lippit will moderate. \n\n\n\n\nGet Zoom Link or Recording

DESCRIPTION:Please join Common Start at the Massachusetts State House on March 5th to advocate directly to House Representatives about the House FY27 budget proposal\, and to ensure that the Common Start priorities are reflected in the FY27 budget proposal that gets released in April. \n\n\n\nImportant events like this allow us to talk in-person with legislators and legislative staff about our FY27 budget priorities\, including increasing the number of families receiving child care financial assistance\, growing funding for the C3 operational grant program to support additional child care providers\, moving Massachusetts further toward child care reimbursement rates that cover the true cost of delivering high-quality care\, and delivering much-needed funding for Head Start providers. \n\n\n\nIf you are new to advocacy days or advocating directly at the State House – no worries! We do this through three strategies: Mobilize through mass action\, Elect working class champions\, and Grow a strong\, active base. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis online training series is designed to train and support new groups\, circles and chapters to run Block by Block: Solidarity Rising in your communities for the rest of the year. Groups will deepen organizing skills\, align with national strategy\, and be ready to take action locally. We’ll meet every other week online for training. Dr. Moomaw has been a lead author of five major Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. As a Science Fellow\, he worked in the U.S. Senate on energy and forestry legislation and on legislation that eliminated American use of CFCs in spray cans to protect the ozone layer. He was the first director of the climate program at the World Resources Institute in 1988 He has been elected an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow. Dr. Moomaw was also founding director of the Tufts Institute of the Environment\, Tufts Climate Initiative\, and co-founder of the Global Development and Environment Institute.
