DESCRIPTION:All over the country\, ICE agents are targeting immigrants in and around Home Depot\, and these atrocities are happening on Home Depot’s watch\, on its properties\, with its silence. \n\n\n\nThe Home Depot has not publicly resisted or condemned these raids or demanded that the Administration stop assaulting and abducting people on and outside its properties. With its silence and inaction\, Home Depot has become ICE’s passive partner. \n\n\n\nIn order to show up for immigrant community members and defeat authoritarianism\, we must engage in the dual strategy of electing people who will stand up to Trump\, and engaging in noncooperation (also known as civil resistance). Movements with no civil resistance actions\, stopping democratic backsliding only happens 7.5% of the time. With a civil resistance added to the movement\, that percentage goes up to 51.7%! \n\n\n\nIn addition to this\, we need to run civil resistance campaigns that hit the power holders where it hurts! When we do symbolic actions like one day protests and vigils\, which are useful in their own way\, power holders can easily ignore them. When we engage in actions that cost money like a boycott\, cost elected leaders their seats\, or stop business as usual\, they are far more likely to respond. DESCRIPTION:Citizens Bank has provided $120 million in loans to CoreCivic\, one of the largest private prison corporations in the country. CoreCivic runs at least 65 prisons and ICE detention centers and has a history of running these facilities with violence and neglect. This is part of GAIN’s effort to coordinate our regional efforts to expand beyond our Burlington initiative\, Justice4All Thursdays\, coordinate our efforts to raise awareness\, and increase pressure on businesses supporting ICE to change their behavior. SUMMARY:Newburyport "Tea & Toy Pary" Protest and March
DESCRIPTION:In place of our regular weekly protest\, the Newburyport Democratic City Committee will host a Tea & Toy Party Protest in honor of the Newburyport Tea Party (yes\, that happened here too!). It will be held on Saturday\, December 13th from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. (Note this event is longer than our weekly protest.) \n\n\n\nIn December 1773\, Newburyport residents burned shipments of tea in Market Square to protest the tea tariffs imposed by King George III and the British Parliament. \n\n\n\nNow we’re protesting the Trump tariffs – but instead of burning tea we will march from the Bartlet Mall to Market Square. Come out in your colonial best and we’ll protest in the 1773 spirit!! \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, we will meet at the Bartlet Mall and march down Green Street to the Christmas tree and Menorah in Market Square. We will have a brief introduction at the Mall and then a speech or two in Market Square about the Newburyport Tea Party and how it parallels what we are going through today. \n\n\n\nTOY PARTY DONATION GUIDELINES \n\n\n\nWe welcome you to bring a new\, unwrapped holiday gift our gift card to donate to the Boys and Girls Club of Salisbury. They asked us to provide the following guidelines: \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for updates\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring an unwrapped toy or gift card only. No clothing. Gifts should be geared for 1st – 12th graders.For middle and high school\, they recommend gift cards for food places like Duncan Donuts\, McDonalds\, pizza places (chains). Please purchase these in $10.00 increments. All gifts must be unwrapped. Thank you in advance to all who choose to bring a gift to our “Tea & Toy Party” protest. The Boys and Girls Club is so appreciative — and we love the idea of expanding our outreach to include helping youth in our community.
