DESCRIPTION:All over the country\, ICE agents are targeting immigrants in and around Home Depot\, and these atrocities are happening on Home Depot’s watch\, on its properties\, with its silence. \n\n\n\nThe Home Depot has not publicly resisted or condemned these raids or demanded that the Administration stop assaulting and abducting people on and outside its properties. With its silence and inaction\, Home Depot has become ICE’s passive partner. \n\n\n\nIn order to show up for immigrant community members and defeat authoritarianism\, we must engage in the dual strategy of electing people who will stand up to Trump\, and engaging in noncooperation (also known as civil resistance). Movements with no civil resistance actions\, stopping democratic backsliding only happens 7.5% of the time. With a civil resistance added to the movement\, that percentage goes up to 51.7%! \n\n\n\nIn addition to this\, we need to run civil resistance campaigns that hit the power holders where it hurts! When we do symbolic actions like one day protests and vigils\, which are useful in their own way\, power holders can easily ignore them. When we engage in actions that cost money like a boycott\, cost elected leaders their seats\, or stop business as usual\, they are far more likely to respond. DESCRIPTION:Citizens Bank has provided $120 million in loans to CoreCivic\, one of the largest private prison corporations in the country. CoreCivic runs at least 65 prisons and ICE detention centers and has a history of running these facilities with violence and neglect. This is part of GAIN’s effort to coordinate our regional efforts to expand beyond our Burlington initiative\, Justice4All Thursdays\, coordinate our efforts to raise awareness\, and increase pressure on businesses supporting ICE to change their behavior. DESCRIPTION:In place of our regular weekly protest\, the Newburyport Democratic City Committee will host a Tea & Toy Party Protest in honor of the Newburyport Tea Party (yes\, that happened here too!). It will be held on Saturday\, December 13th from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. (Note this event is longer than our weekly protest.) \n\n\n\nIn December 1773\, Newburyport residents burned shipments of tea in Market Square to protest the tea tariffs imposed by King George III and the British Parliament. \n\n\n\nNow we’re protesting the Trump tariffs – but instead of burning tea we will march from the Bartlet Mall to Market Square. Come out in your colonial best and we’ll protest in the 1773 spirit!! \n\n\n\nWeather permitting\, we will meet at the Bartlet Mall and march down Green Street to the Christmas tree and Menorah in Market Square. We will have a brief introduction at the Mall and then a speech or two in Market Square about the Newburyport Tea Party and how it parallels what we are going through today. \n\n\n\nTOY PARTY DONATION GUIDELINES \n\n\n\nWe welcome you to bring a new\, unwrapped holiday gift our gift card to donate to the Boys and Girls Club of Salisbury. They asked us to provide the following guidelines: \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for updates\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring an unwrapped toy or gift card only. No clothing. We anticipate that they will continue through January\, weather permitting. \n\n\n\nThe Massachusetts Constitution guarantees equal protection under all laws to all people\, regardless of nationality\, citizenship\, or immigration status. When due process is denied to any group\, it weakens the rule of law for all of us. The League of Women Voters supports due process for all persons\, including the right to a fair hearing\, the right to counsel\, the right of appeal\, and the right to humane treatment\, and that no person or group should suffer legal discrimination. \n\n\n\nJoin us for Witness Wednesdays starting July 23 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Plymouth County Correctional Facility\, where we will peacefully protest against due process violations and show support for ICE detainees. \n\n\n\nSafety Note \n\n\n\nThis is a heavy traffic intersection. We will follow safety protocols to avoid blocking street traffic. Review LWV peaceful protest guidance HERE. We will only be gathering along the sidewalk and grassy areas outside of the Facility and along the Sheriff’s office. \n\n\n\nLogistics \n\n\n\nSigns: We will have due process rights signs available. DESCRIPTION:Carlos Zapata Rivera\, the man who was violently arrested in Fitchburg with his baby in the car Nov 6\, has a check-in appointment at the ICE office at 10AM tomorrow. With the help of the ACLU\, he is suing ICE. The ACLU has reached out and asked if we could be there early. We will be there and set up at 9:30AM. He will go in for his appointment. We will likely carry on with our program (time uncertain) – but break immediately if we hear resolution. Of course\, we have no idea when that may happen\, so we will have to play it by ear. DESCRIPTION:Standing out Home Depot Natick entrance sending a clear message to stop allowing ICE raids on their property and to boycott shopping there! \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for updates\n\n\n\n\nAll over the country\, ICE agents are targeting immigrants in and around Home Depot\, and these atrocities are happening on Home Depot’s watch\, on its properties\, with its silence. \n\n\n\nThe Home Depot has not publicly resisted or condemned these raids or demanded that the Administration stop assaulting and abducting people on and outside its properties. With its silence and inaction\, Home Depot has become ICE’s passive partner. \n\n\n\nIn order to show up for immigrant community members and defeat authoritarianism\, we must engage in the dual strategy of electing people who will stand up to Trump\, and engaging in noncooperation (also known as civil resistance). Movements with no civil resistance actions\, stopping democratic backsliding only happens 7.5% of the time. With a civil resistance added to the movement\, that percentage goes up to 51.7%! \n\n\n\nIn addition to this\, we need to run civil resistance campaigns that hit the power holders where it hurts! When we do symbolic actions like one day protests and vigils\, which are useful in their own way\, power holders can easily ignore them. When we engage in actions that cost money like a boycott\, cost elected leaders their seats\, or stop business as usual\, they are far more likely to respond. So we engage in noncooperation because we must impose real and tangible costs to powerholders’ bottom-lines! \n\n\n\nA core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action.
