DESCRIPTION:This a local Indivisible Maynard Area event! \n\n\n\nWe meet the 2nd Thursday each month at the Maynard Firehouse to get informed and to take action. We alternate between trainings\, speakers\, and more traditional huddles but try to have some kind of action involved at each. Past actions included prepping for No Kings and other standouts\, folding zines about reporting ICE\, putting together whistle kits\, signing petitions and postcard writing. \n\n\n\nFor our October meeting we are focused on the midterms. Christine Brown of Indivisible Acton Area and TurnPurple2Blue.org will give a talk called “What will it take to WIN the midterms -and how can YOU make a difference?” She will walk us through some key races and final actions we can take to bring in a blue wave. We will also share some important information around election protection and will do some prep for our Oct 17 No Kings: Vote Early event at Haynes Court. \n\n\n\nWe collect canned and dry packaged food for Open Table at our meetings. DESCRIPTION:Speechifying\, Shakespeare\, & Sea Shanties! Every week\, we stand on Burlington Mall Road with signs\, costumes and flags. We come out to show support for our immigrant neighbors\, express our shame at ICE\, and build community in opposition to the cruel and unconstitutional actions of our government. We are there to tell the world that there is a ICE CONCENTRATION CAMP just two blocks away.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are not there merely to make propaganda against ICE. We are there to make propaganda against fear. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery car that honks in support as they pass is in a small way joining the Resistance. Many who honk may be expressing themselves against ICE terror for the first time. This breaks the ice\, and makes it easier for them to take the next steps. It helps them help others to overcome their fear. We are there to cause a ripple effect. To fight against the terror visited on immigrants\, we need to fight against our own internalized terror. We have nothing to fear. We are America\, fighting back.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you REGISTER by FRIDAY\, you will be notified of cancellations by email. SUMMARY:Activism that Works
DESCRIPTION:Do you wonder what resistance actions are the most effective in standing up to the Trump administration and the Republicans in Congress? \n\n\n\nThis interactive two-hour workshop will present theory and case studies that will help us explore the most effective actions and tactics that can be used to create social change – including addressing the current threat to democracy in the U.S.  \n\n\n\nSpecifically\, the workshop will focus on 1) identifying and putting pressure on primary and secondary targets\, 2) learning about the importance of communicating with unlikely allies and mobilizing passive supporters\, and 3) using creative tactics that draw on cultural resonances of the target audience(s). \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Workshop\n\n\n\n\nInterspersed with learning and studying campaign case studies will be small group discussions and exercises designed to help participants apply concepts to goals and projects they care most about. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nBetsy Leondar-Wright\, PhD\, is a long-time economic justice activist whose graduate studies focused on what makes social movements succeed.  She was active in the campaign to pressure Citizens Bank to stop financing ICE private prison contractors.  She is the author of several books\, most recently Is It Racist? Is It Sexist? \n\n\n\nAnne Wright is a long-time social justice activist.  Over the last 40 years\, she has focused on the anti-intervention and environmental justice movements\, and on voter registration and education for low-income youth.  The sisters are both co-editors of the  Don’t Mourn Organize Eastern Mass substack\, an e-newsletter that recommends action alerts for progressives in the greater Boston area. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact Kate Holland at kholland@uuwayland.org and visit https://classmatters.org/activism-that-works/
