SUMMARY:Standout for Democracy | Protest in Methuen
DESCRIPTION:This a local Indivisible event! Our standout is comprised of a group of seniors who decided to do more than watch the news\, become upset\, anxious\, and feel powerless about what is happening in and to our country. We began a peaceful protest action to register our displeasure! We wanted to demonstrate in a way that empowered us and allowed us to take back some control and voice our concerns. Our motto is “WE MARCHED THEN\, WE MARCH NOW.” Since we range in age from the 70s to 90s\, we try to standout on Fridays from 1pm to 2pm. We standout weather permitting so we would not standout in the rain or snow. We are looking forward to warmer weather. DESCRIPTION:Reporting shows that DHS/ICE are actively scouting\, purchasing\, and planning to convert approximately 23 warehouses nationwide into new immigration detention and processing facilities. These sites are expected to detain between 1\,500 and 10\,000 people each\, signaling a massive expansion of detention capacity and the normalization of large-scale confinement in facilities built for storing things\, not imprisoning people. \n\n\n\nSome of the people confined in these warehouses might be our neighbors from here in Brockton. \n\n\n\nLocal action has already forced the cancellation of some of the proposed facilities. Further action is possible. \n\n\n\nAlthough no new facilities have appeared in Massachusetts so far\, ICE is already holding people at their Burlington office and at the Plymouth County House of Corrections. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for exact location\n\n\n\n\nDetention Watch Network is spearheading a National Day of Action on April 25.
