SUMMARY:Standout to protect Social Security and safety net programs
DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Indivisible/Progressive MA Social Security Working Group will be hosting a visibility event to protect Social Security from further devious service cuts\, and to show our objection to cuts in our other safety net programs\, on Tuesday\, July 21\, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm\, at Fresh Pond Parkway in front of Whole Foods Market. \n\n\n\nWhile this administration was spending 1B per day fighting a senseless war of choice in Iran\, we’ve seen cutbacks to Medicaid. Some 7.5 million people were expected to lose coverage due to changes to the public health insurance program\, along with more complicated and more frequent paperwork\, and SNAP—The Big\, Ugly Bill cuts SNAP by nearly $187 billion through 2034\, the largest cut to the program in history. Social Security is on the chopping block too\, with 7K employees laid off\, some rural offices closed\, and long wait times on the phone to connect with customer service. Trump’s administration keeps calling it an “entitlement program!” It is not; it is an earned income program\, and House Speaker Mike Johnson talks openly about cutting the program if Republicans win the House. \n\n\n\nLet’s voice our opposition to this devastating cruelty toward ordinary Americans! \n\n\n\nWe’ll have people holding signs about Social Security and SNAP cuts. Other related signs are welcome. \n\n\n\nIf we have enough people\, some will hold the Burma-Shave-style sequential signs with jingle lines\, and a banner. \n\n\n\nPlease bring signs related to safety net programs. Signs from previous “Hands Off” demonstrations are good! If you don’t have a sign\, please come anyhow! We’d like to show our solidarity with everyone affected by the cruel cuts to our safety net programs. \n\n\n\nPublic Transportation: Red Line to Alewife Station; Buses #74 or #78 from Harvard Square. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for updates\n\n\n\n\nParking is available in the Whole Foods parking lot. Viana\, Managing Attorney and founder of Massa Viana Immigration Law\, has been a tireless advocate for immigration justice and civil rights over the course of his career. Viana:  \n\n\n\n“Antonio is passionate about immigration law\, civil rights\, and constitutional issues\, as well as about the clients he represents. He founded Massa Viana Law with the goal of creating a firm guided by the principles of excellency in advocacy\, mutual respect\, and most importantly\, of service. \n\n\n\nAn immigrant himself who first moved to the United States when he was 12 years old\, Antonio tackled the immigration system first in his own personal life. He discovered that many times\, in order to succeed\, you need to push the envelope and not give up\, despite the odds. That vision is employed daily in his firm\, where attorneys and staff are encouraged to seek creative legal solutions for difficult problems\, even when the answers are not readily apparent. \n\n\n\nThis never-give-up attitude allowed Antonio to become the first known undocumented immigrant attorney in Massachusetts. He attended Roger Williams University School of Law\, where he was the first Latino Editor-in-Chief of the RWU Law Review\, as well as winner of the Esther Clark and National Religious Freedom moot court competitions; he sat for the bar exam in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Rhode Island would postpone his bar admission until he became a legal resident\, but Massachusetts swore him despite his lack of legal status. Antonio started practicing immediately in immigration removal defense. \n\n\n\nAntonio\, together with his team\, have helped hundreds of people—from those seeking refuge within our borders\, to victims of violence and crimes\, to those looking to once again be reunited with their loved ones—achieve their dreams of legal residency and citizenship.”

DESCRIPTION:Updated with New Carpool and Parking Information! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEARING WITNESS STANDOUT SCHEDULE AND GUIDELINES \n\n\n\nAbove all\, we are committed to nonviolence. \n\n\n\n\nThe standout takes place every Wednesday\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrom 11 am to noon\, Bearing Witness organizers and special guest speakers address those gathered and discuss a variety of immigration-related topics. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrom noon-12:30 pm\, the loudspeakers are turned toward the ICE building and those gathered are invited to come up to the microphone and read parts of the U.S. Constitution. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrom 12:30-1 p.m.\, the crowd turns and marches down District Avenue to Mall Road\, where we stand with our signs\, sing and chant\, and wave to passing motorists. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe ALWAYS stand peacefully with signs outside the ICE facility.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe ALWAYS hold signs with supportive messages about immigrants and/or against ICE. We do not focus on other issues. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe do not block the entrance\, approach ICE agents\, or block traffic on District Avenue.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe DO NOT stand in restricted areas as designated by Burlington police.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe IGNORE and do not engage with “counter protestors\,” those who are supporters of ICE.\n\n\n\n\nINTERACTIONS WITH DETAINEES AND ICE OFFICIALS\n\n\n\nImmigrants who are fortunate to leave the facility have shown gratitude for our presence and some share their stories with us. \n\n\n\n\nICE agents tend to cover their faces with masks\, many record us with their phones\, others give a smug smile or laugh\, though they rarely say anything.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe security officers stationed at the front of the building have not bothered us to date. \n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info & Email Updates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEARING WITNESS CARPOOL SERVICE \n\n\n\n\nWe have a NEW volunteer-led carpool\, which operates from a few nearby parking lots. Exit the bus at the “Burlington Mall Road” stop\, opposite NE Executive Park\, which is at the intersection of Mall Road and District Avenue. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you prefer a shorter bus ride\, you can drive to Burlington and park at the United Church of Christ (6 Lexington St.\, Burlington) or Temple Shalom Emeth (16 Lexington St.\, Burlington) and walk to the 350 bus stop at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Bedford Street.\n\n\n\n\nSIGNS FOR THE STANDOUT\n\n\n\nDue to the ongoing parking issues\, we recommend that standout attendees do not bring their own signs (it clearly shows the towing company that you’re heading to the standout).  \n\n\n\nInstead\, please consider borrowing a sign from the large selection offered by Bearing Witness at each Wednesday standout. Upon arrival ask any safety marshall (wearing an orange vest) for the location of the box of signs. DESCRIPTION:During this critical election cycle\, we are making important calls for Roy Cooper for US Senate\, Justice Anita Earls\, and State House candidates. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are partnering with two grassroots groups\, Down Home NC and Carolina Federation\, to support their endorsed candidates\, and with our partner AINC (All In for North Carolina). DESCRIPTION:MOVIE NIGHT FOR ACTIVISTS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a free screening of the documentary “Lightworkers\,” a feature-length documentary that explores activism\, identity\, and civic responsibility through a series of interconnected interviews. Grounded in a socio-historic perspective\, the film examines how individuals understand their role in society and what it means to act in times of political and social uncertainty. Watch the
trailer here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors will open at 6:30 PM\, there will be brief introductory remarks at 6:45 PM\, and the film will run from 7:00-8:30 PM. Thank you! \n\n\n\n\n\nWeather \n\n\n\nAll attendees are ultimately responsible for making their own decisions about travel.  The organizers are going to use the following guidelines to modify or cancel events in advance.  A sudden change in conditions just before or during events\, such as a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning\, could happen and organizers will do their best to communicate any decisions appropriately. \n\n\n\n\n\nNo change to event:Normal to heavy RainWindy\, but no warningsLight snow on ground\, but not falling \n\n\n\nCancel:Burlington schools cancelledTemp/Wind Chill < 20FStorm advisory with snow or high wind predictedFreezing rain falling or predicted \n\n\n\n\n\nShorten event in advance\, limit to standout:Temp/Wind Chill < 30FTemp Ok\, but ground wetDeep snow in grassy area\, sidewalks clear \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat happens at this ICE office? \n\n\n\nICE personnel depart from District Ave. in unmarked vans with tinted windows on missions to abduct immigrants across New England. Immigrants may also show up at the office for appointments. The facility on District Ave was never intended to be a detention center\, yet immigration lawyers and media interviews reveal that people are now being housed here in conditions that have been called “abysmal” and “unsanitary.” \n\n\n\nWhat to expect at Justice 4 All? \n\n\n\nWe are committed to nonviolence\, and we stand peacefully with signs outside the facility. We do not block the entrance\, we do not physically approach ICE agents as they walk to/from the parking lot\, and we do not block traffic on District Ave. \n\n\n\nSigns \n\n\n\nThis is a very targeted action outside the ICE facility\, so it’s not the venue for protesting other causes. Even though we care deeply about other issues\, while outside ICE we must remain focused on immigration.  \n\n\n\nParking and other tips \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor those with mobility challenges\, please keep in mind that the lots closest to ICE — the FAA lot beside ICE and the BAE Systems lot directly across the street from ICE — have both been blocked off. There are restaurants nearby (Clover\, Pressed Cafe\, Chipotle) to get food and use the bathroom.  \n\n\n\n\n\nBefore arriving\, please consider your own self-preservation (citizenship status) and self-care (sunscreen\, hydration\, etc.). \n\n\n\nIf you would like to receive updates on Justice4All Thursdays and reminders of our events\, please add your email below to join our list.
