Truthful Media Recommendations

From defunding NPR, consolidating ownership of CNN and CBS under billionaire toadies, gutting the Washington Post, or pressuring networks to cancel or fire individual shows and reporters, the Trump regime has fully moved into authoritarianism. To get the truth of what is really happening on the ground you must seek other sources than legacy media who continue bow down by underplaying the truth, promoting MAGA lies and generally refusing to fully cover this corrupt regime.

We continually update this page with suggestions from our readers.

Local News

Look for non-profit news in your town, such as the Boxborough News and The Acton Exchange, which are weekly.

The Boston Globe a good traditional newspaper that requires a subscription.

National News

The Guardian–  National news.  This website is based in the United Kingdom and has the best coverage of US national news that reveals and does not bow down to the Regime. Free, donations are requested.

Here’s a great example: How the US Right Wing is Taking Over News Media

Heather Cox Richardson News with a historical context. The best commentary on how the news of the day fits a historical context. Read her free daily newsletter, or listen to her on Facebook or Youtube. More features with paid subscription.

Robert Hubbell First Edition–  Summary of political news and actions with a critical eye on corporate media.  A good balance between clear-eyed analysis and democracy advocacy. Free daily newsletter. Audio feature, if you prefer to listen.  More features with paid subscription.

BBC News Watch easily on Youtube. The BBC is very widely used across the political spectrum. It is the most popular source of news among both Conservative and Labour voters, and among both Leave and Remain voters. Similarly, the UK’s independent communications regulator Ofcom has found that large majorities of audiences in the UK value public service media providers like the BBC very highly for providing trustworthy news programs that help people understand what is going on in the world.

19thnews.org/newsletters/daily/– Non-profit national news focussing on gender and LGTBQ policy and stories.

APNews– Non-profit news collaborative, owned by members. Some both sides-ism but better than New York Times or Washington Post.

Brian Tyler Cohen is one of the most viewed independent progressive political hosts on YouTube. He has videos on youtube and a podcast, if you prefer listening. He has daily breaking news clips followed by in-depth commentary; and interviews with top figures (including President Biden, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Elizabeth Warren, Jamie Raskin, Pete Buttigieg, Mark Cuban, Jen Psaki, Rachel Maddow, Nancy Pelosi, and many more);

The Bulwark Analysis and reporting in defense of America’s liberal democracy. A refreshing take from former Republicans. Featuring: Sarah Longwell, Tim Miller, Bill Kristol, Jonathan V. Last, Mona Charen, A.B. Stoddard, Michael Steele, and George Conway. If you are missing cable news, watch them on Youtube, or find articles, newsletters and podcasts on the website.

The Contrarian Jennifer Rubin has left The Washington Post to start a new pro-democracy website with her fellow refugees from Bezos (their tagline is “not owned by anybody”). She will include guest writers to discuss the “unvarnished truth” and “voices that speak to wider audiences, ones not served by corporate media pablum.” Free and paid levels

Democracy Now Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez and founded in 1996. Democracy Now! is audience-supported, which means that their editorial independence is never compromised by corporate or government interests. Tom Hartman has a program here in addition to his newsletter, The Hartman Report.

MeidasNews.com (MTN) MeidasTouch Network (MTN) was founded by three brothers Ben, Brett, and Jordy Meiselas. MTN is a pro-democracy news network. MTN has quickly established itself as one of the most viewed and visited news networks in the world. Read more about the team behind this very popular site. The youtube channel, Meidas Touch, is independently owned and operated. Youtube has moved to AI generated hyperbolic titles on the thumbnails, which can be off-putting.

MSNBC: Some shows on this channel have not compromised their reporting yet. I am familiar with Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace, and Lawrence O’Donnell.

PBS/NPR– Prefer watching? You can find PBS Newshour on your TV or online. If you are a member, you can use your “passport” to watch shows at your convenience. Prefer listening? You can stream national public radio on your phone or computer. Massachusetts has two public radio stations WBUR and GBH. The websites also offer newsletters, podcasts and written articles. Trump is attacking them financially – please consider redirecting your subscription money from Washington Post, New York Times and Paramount Plus to NPR.

ProPublica–  In-depth Investigative reporting. Free, donations are requested.

Zeteo is a substack newsletter and website founded by Medhi Hassan, who resigned from MSNBC after they cancelled his show and tried to demote him, launched his own media company. “Zeteo is not just a media company; it’s a movement for media accountability. So join us as we challenge the powerful, change the narrative, and champion good ol’ fashioned adversarial journalism.”

Paid Media

The Atlantic– In-depth analysis with a conservative view. Very good articles by Anne Applebaum on Authoritarianism and Ukraine.

Jessica Valenti, Abortion Every Day Abortion news from every corner of the country.  You won’t find these stories in legacy media.

Joyce Vance, Civil Discourse– In-depth legal news from a former US Attorney and Federal Prosecutor.

Marc Elias, Democracy Docket–  The legal team that fights for voting rights and election fairness every day in every state.  There is limited free access.

Rolling Stone– In-depth reporting.

MAGA is expert at weaponizing media to create a toxic stew of chaos, despair, and disinformation. One way we can keep up our strength to fight back is to be thoughtful about the media we consume.

Make a conscious decision about when and where you get news.

What you choose to pay attention to during the day has an impact on you. Which news sources help you understand the world more fully, and which ones only leave you fearful and despairing?   Many “news” sources are designed to trigger fears, sell products, create an addiction to that source, or reinforce pre-existing beliefs. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, we suggest you limit these:

  • Social Media– Limit scrolling- set a consistent time and time limit.  Turn off notifications. Trade Twitter for BlueSky. Remember Facebook and Instagram are tweaking their algorithms to curry favor with Trump. Foreign bots are rampaging on social media with laughing emojis and discouraging messages-remember these aren’t even American bots.
  • Legacy Print Media– The New York Times and Washington Post have consistently normalized and sane-washed Trump. Layoffs and resignations have depleted their ranks of serious journalists.   Especially skip their “op-ed” pages.  Turn off notifications.  You could even cancel and use the money for other sources.  Heather Cox Richardson and Robert Hubbell often include gift articles for these papers.
  • Cable News– CNN made a conscious decision to move towards MAGA. Their last journalist standing, Jim Acosta, resigned 1/28/25 on the air.  MSNBC varies (Morning Joe bent the knee at Mar-a-Lago immediately after the election):  choose one to follow, then turn the rest off.   Rachel Maddow has a show on Monday nights.

How to Stop Trump from Election Interference

Virtual Event

March 31 @ 1:00 pm 2:00 pm EDT

Presented by Protect Democracy and All Voting is Local. American elections have never been perfectly free and fair for everyone. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and disinformation have long been features of our political landscape. Foreign governments have worked to undermine public confidence in our democracy. And for the past decade, President Trump and his allies have spread lies about election fraud to delegitimize results they didn’t like. None of that is new.

What is new — and what makes 2026 different — is that the Trump administration is now turning the full power of the federal government against our own elections. This is not a continuation of the old playbook. It is a dramatic escalation. Hear from Protect Democracy’s Acting Chief Impact Officer Ben Berwick and All Voting is Local Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Hannah Fried on the threats and how we can face them together.

Standing up to the billionaire agenda: SURJ in conversation with Graham Platner

Virtual Event

April 7 @ 5:45 pm 6:45 pm EDT

This year, we have the chance to fight not only to cut the legs out from under Trump’s billionaire agenda, but to take on the Democratic establishment that is refusing to stand up to him and fight for working-class people. SURJ is proud to put our endorsement behind candidates we believe will help implement that vision.

We helped our first endorsed candidate, Analilia Mejía, win her special election in a major upset in New Jersey. Next, we were excited to endorse the Sunrise Movement co-founder and longtime organizer Will Lawrence running for Congress in Michigan.

Now, we’re proud to put our endorsement behind Graham Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, who is running in the Maine Democratic Senate primary, calling out the divide-and-conquer tactics of the billionaire class and the despicable actions of ICE, standing up for Palestinians, trans people, and the working class.

Join Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) in conversation with Graham Platner, a working-class oyster farmer running in the Democratic primary for Senate in Maine. SURJ has endorsed Platner because we believe that his vision for taking on the divide-and-conquer tactics of the billionaire agenda by building the multi-racial, working-class is exactly what we need right now. Not only to fight against MAGA, but also to stand up to mainstream Democrats who are failing to lead us towards a country that puts people above profit.

With SURJ leaders, we’ll discuss how his combat deployments in the Middle East shaped his anti-war politics, what it will take to divert white men from the far right online pipeline, and how we can work to expand our movement for racial and economic justice and stand up to the billionaire agenda.

Stop – This Is a Tax Robbery! Standout

April 11 @ 10:30 am 12:00 pm EDT

This peaceful standout is a response to a billionaire class that is extracting everything from working people and giving nothing back. Your taxes fund yachts, the ICE and CBP slush fund, unconstitutional government surveillance, and war crimes disguised as military operations nobody voted for, while SNAP gets cut, health insurance and prescriptions get more unaffordable, and working families choose between rent, healthcare, childcare, and groceries. We’re not demanding charity. We’re demanding much fairer tax policy that builds America up, not break it down. The village built everything. It’s time the castle paid its share. Join us to say, “Stop – This is a tax robbery!”

  • Bring your signs
  • Bring your power
  • Bring your people

This is a safe environment for all of our communities: Teachers, Veterans, Retirees. Moms, Dads, brothers, sisters, teens and children (our next generation of activists!). People of all colors, race, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and disabilities. LGBTQIA+ … you name it YOU ARE WELCOME!

Sign ideas: My Taxes Should Not Fund War Crimes – No Taxes for Dictators / Fascists – Tea’s Up in 2026 Like It’s 1776 – Abolish ICE and Its Slush Fund – Grifters aren’t patriots – Clean up on aisle 47

EXPECTATIONS: This will be a PEACEFUL standout. Violence of any kind will not be tolerated. Do not engage with any counter-protesters. Do not bring weapons of any kind, even if you have a license to carry.

Immigration Policy and Our Community: Get Educated in the Age of ICE

April 11 @ 9:30 am 12:00 pm EDT

The purpose of the Town Hall style meeting is to strengthen education and advocacy on behalf of fair, just, and humane immigration policies.

The meeting will focus on immigrants, ICE, and local responses – both existing and needed – to current federal immigration policies. In doing so, organizers hope to build a constituency for immigrant justice, awaken consciousness about Hanscom flights deporting immigrants from this region, and demonstrate the seriousness with which the co-sponsors are addressing ICE, the policies governing it, and its activities.

Co-sponsors, along with the Lincoln Democratic Town Committee, include Lincoln Witness, the Racial Justice Committee at First Parish Lincoln, and the Social Justice Commission at St. Anne’s in-the-Field. Invited panelists include representatives from the Attorney General’s Office, Fuerza, the International Institute of New England, the Organizers of Bearing Witness at the ICE Burlington Detention Center, and a group in opposition to the use of Hanscom Air Field to deport immigrants.

Hear from speakers from the following offices:

• The MA Attorney General’s office • Fuerza, Waltham • International Institute of New England • Organizers, Bearing Witness, Burlington\ • Research Team, Immigrant deportations from Hanscom

Postcard Party-Lancaster

April 8 @ 6:30 pm 7:45 pm EDT

Nashoba Indivisible local event.

Postcard writing and postcard pickup.

We’re writing to rally Democrats in Virginia to vote YES in the April 21 special election to restore fair elections. Virginians have the choice to approve temporary congressional districts to level the playing field after Trump and Republicans created many new safe US House seats in red states.

Need to mail your postcards between April 7 and April 14. The ideal mailing date is April 10. Only mail cards later than April 10 if you need the extra time. After April 14, some of the cards would likely not arrive until after Election Day.

Second one – News boosting postcards to combat disinformation (200) These need to be sent on April 15.

Both of these postcards are free, so the only cost is stamps – that’s 15 postcards for $10.

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Brookline Rally for Democracy

Every Saturday at 1:00 PM | Coolidge Corner

Join members of three Brookline pro-democracy groups — indivisible Activist Evenings, Brookline Pax, and Speak Out, Seniors! — for our weekly rally at Coolidge Corner.

We gather to raise our voices and our signs in defense of democracy, justice, and decency — and to stand united against the abuses of the Trump administration and the forces that threaten our rights and freedoms.

We stand for:

• Immigrant rights, human rights, and racial justice

• Free speech, the Constitution, and the rule of law

• Access to health and healthcare for all

• Protection of our planet and the future we leave to the next generation

We choose empathy over cruelty, peace over violence, and hope over fear.

Our rallies are peaceful, spirited, and uplifting — a chance to connect, recharge, and stand up for what matters. Bring your friends, your voice, and your sign (or borrow one of ours!).

All are welcome!  The rally is multi-generational and family-friendly; those using walkers or other mobility devices may use them to sit to participate.

In the event of inclement weather, we’ll each use our best judgment about whether to attend. We hope you’ll do the same!

Please join us, one rally at a time.  We’ll continue for as long as it takes.
