Immigration Policy and Our Community: Get Educated in the Age of ICE

April 11 @ 9:30 am 12:00 pm EDT

The purpose of the Town Hall style meeting is to strengthen education and advocacy on behalf of fair, just, and humane immigration policies.

The meeting will focus on immigrants, ICE, and local responses – both existing and needed – to current federal immigration policies. In doing so, organizers hope to build a constituency for immigrant justice, awaken consciousness about Hanscom flights deporting immigrants from this region, and demonstrate the seriousness with which the co-sponsors are addressing ICE, the policies governing it, and its activities.

Co-sponsors, along with the Lincoln Democratic Town Committee, include Lincoln Witness, the Racial Justice Committee at First Parish Lincoln, and the Social Justice Commission at St. Anne’s in-the-Field. Invited panelists include representatives from the Attorney General’s Office, Fuerza, the International Institute of New England, the Organizers of Bearing Witness at the ICE Burlington Detention Center, and a group in opposition to the use of Hanscom Air Field to deport immigrants.

Hear from speakers from the following offices:

• The MA Attorney General’s office • Fuerza, Waltham • International Institute of New England • Organizers, Bearing Witness, Burlington\ • Research Team, Immigrant deportations from Hanscom

OUR MISSION

We focus on Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) efforts, voting access, and defending election integrity, because we believe voter participation is the foundation to a healthy democracy.

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Postcard Party-Lancaster

April 8 @ 6:30 pm 7:45 pm EDT

Nashoba Indivisible local event.

Postcard writing and postcard pickup.

We’re writing to rally Democrats in Virginia to vote YES in the April 21 special election to restore fair elections. Virginians have the choice to approve temporary congressional districts to level the playing field after Trump and Republicans created many new safe US House seats in red states.

Need to mail your postcards between April 7 and April 14. The ideal mailing date is April 10. Only mail cards later than April 10 if you need the extra time. After April 14, some of the cards would likely not arrive until after Election Day.

Second one – News boosting postcards to combat disinformation (200) These need to be sent on April 15.

Both of these postcards are free, so the only cost is stamps – that’s 15 postcards for $10.

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Brookline Rally for Democracy

May 2 @ 1:00 pm 2:00 pm EDT

Brookline Rally for Democracy

Every Saturday at 1:00 PM | Coolidge Corner

Join members of three Brookline pro-democracy groups — indivisible Activist Evenings, Brookline Pax, and Speak Out, Seniors! — for our weekly rally at Coolidge Corner.

We gather to raise our voices and our signs in defense of democracy, justice, and decency — and to stand united against the abuses of the Trump administration and the forces that threaten our rights and freedoms.

We stand for:

• Immigrant rights, human rights, and racial justice

• Free speech, the Constitution, and the rule of law

• Access to health and healthcare for all

• Protection of our planet and the future we leave to the next generation

We choose empathy over cruelty, peace over violence, and hope over fear.

Our rallies are peaceful, spirited, and uplifting — a chance to connect, recharge, and stand up for what matters. Bring your friends, your voice, and your sign (or borrow one of ours!).

All are welcome!  The rally is multi-generational and family-friendly; those using walkers or other mobility devices may use them to sit to participate.

In the event of inclement weather, we’ll each use our best judgment about whether to attend. We hope you’ll do the same!

Please join us, one rally at a time.  We’ll continue for as long as it takes.

De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition Call

Virtual Event

April 16 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm EDT

Join us to strengthen our De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition’s collective power!

During this national mobilization call we will share information about the coalition including how your group can join or get involved. We’ll review our accomplishments, share resources and provide updates on upcoming actions. We also want to hear from you, so we’ll make time for some live engagement with the De-ICE Steering Committee and National Leaders!

Please note that this call will be particularly relevant for group leaders/members who are already involved in the De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition and leaders/members of groups who are interested in getting involved.

Registrants will receive a Zoom link by email prior to the event.

Citizens Bank is financing ICE detention companies.

Citizens Bank talks a lot about valuing diversity and building strong communities. What they don’t talk about: they’re helping for-profit prison companies get the cash they need to lock more people away in ICE detention.

You’ve heard the stories that come out of the facilities run by CoreCivic and The GEO Group. 911 dispatchers flooded with calls. Severe medical neglect. Children locked up for months on end. But even as the heartbreaking stories pour out of ICE detention centers, Citizens Bank keeps pouring money into them.

Citizens Bank has dodged accountability for their important role in supporting inhumane ICE detention. Until now.

Find out how we are working to get them to STOP at www.de-icecitizensbank.org

A core principle behind all De-ICE Citizens Bank events is a commitment to nonviolent action. By registering for this event, you agree that the De-ICE Citizens Bank coalition may contact you about future De-ICE actions and ways to support the coalition’s work.Read less

Hearing on Ballot Initiatives Reducing Taxes on the Rich

March 30 @ 1:00 pm 5:00 pm EDT

Oppose the tax cut ballot questions
Information on the impact of the tax cut is here.
Information (a very detailed, deep dive) on 62f, as well as more information on the tax cut is here:
The announcement for the the March 30 hearing on the two MHTC tax cut ballot questions is here. This includes administrative bill numbers, information on how to register for oral testimony and how to format and submit written testimony. Further questions can be answered by emailing Elizabeth.Berman@masenate.gov.

Again, the hearing is on March 30, 1:00-4:30 PM in room A2 of the Statehouse. The deadline to register for oral testimony is March 27, noon, the deadline to submit written testimony is April 2, 5:00 PM.
Contact your legislators (see above for links to their contact info). Here are some talking points:

  • These two proposals are a regressive giveaway to the billionaire Epstein class that will threaten vital services needed by working people in the state.
  • High taxes are NOT driving wealthy entrepreneurs from the state! The vast majority of people leaving the state are working people making well under $200,000/yr. They are leaving because the costs of housing and living are too high. Increased property taxes (below) will only make housing more expensive for working people.
  • The tax cut proposals, coupled with the implementation of the Big Beautiful Bill could bankrupt the state.
  • The proposals are so toxic as to amount to an attempt by plutocrats from the MHTC to blackmail state legislators to enact tax cuts for the rich that would nullify the Fair Share Amendment, which was passed by voters by a sizeable majority. FSA is politically popular and has yielded many benefits including free community college and improvements to transportation infrastructure (especially the T).
  • So, legislators must NOT negotiate with MHTC to cut taxes! The Epstein class must pay its fair share.
  • Tax cuts will drive up property taxes as local communities struggle to compensate for lost services. This will threaten home owners and renters as well as small businesses.

Name and shame members of the MHTC (especially if you are an alumnus/alumna of or donor to any of the nonprofits on the list). MHTC’s membership can be found here.
Finally, if you are really interested in pursuing this issue, the SEIU and RaiseUp Massachusetts are heading up much of the effort. You can contact Harris Gruman (harris.gruman@seiuma.org ) there for updates on further actions.
