SUMMARY:Standout to protect Social Security and safety net programs
DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Indivisible/Progressive MA Social Security Working Group will be hosting a visibility event to protect Social Security from further devious service cuts\, and to show our objection to cuts in our other safety net programs\, on Tuesday\, July 21\, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm\, at Fresh Pond Parkway in front of Whole Foods Market. \n\n\n\nWhile this administration was spending 1B per day fighting a senseless war of choice in Iran\, we’ve seen cutbacks to Medicaid. Some 7.5 million people were expected to lose coverage due to changes to the public health insurance program\, along with more complicated and more frequent paperwork\, and SNAP—The Big\, Ugly Bill cuts SNAP by nearly $187 billion through 2034\, the largest cut to the program in history. Social Security is on the chopping block too\, with 7K employees laid off\, some rural offices closed\, and long wait times on the phone to connect with customer service. Trump’s administration keeps calling it an “entitlement program!” It is not; it is an earned income program\, and House Speaker Mike Johnson talks openly about cutting the program if Republicans win the House. \n\n\n\nLet’s voice our opposition to this devastating cruelty toward ordinary Americans! \n\n\n\nWe’ll have people holding signs about Social Security and SNAP cuts. Other related signs are welcome. \n\n\n\nIf we have enough people\, some will hold the Burma-Shave-style sequential signs with jingle lines\, and a banner. \n\n\n\nPlease bring signs related to safety net programs. Signs from previous “Hands Off” demonstrations are good! If you don’t have a sign\, please come anyhow! We’d like to show our solidarity with everyone affected by the cruel cuts to our safety net programs. \n\n\n\nPublic Transportation: Red Line to Alewife Station; Buses #74 or #78 from Harvard Square. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP for updates\n\n\n\n\nParking is available in the Whole Foods parking lot. (Do not park across the street at CVS or Trader Joe’s\, or you will probably get ticketed.) \n\n\n\nNo rain date. Please use sunscreen! \n\n\n\nGround is fairly level. \n\n\n\nHope to see you there!
