To help us see and better understand the reality and context of ICE’s incursion into our community, this forum will feature a scholar, a clergyman, an attorney who is the CEO of a 100+ year-old immigrant and refugee settlement organization, and a volunteer at Waltham’s immigrant crisis response organization.

Ripley Hastings is a Boston business lawyer and current Moderator of the Weston Town Meeting. He has served in several local public offices over the past 45 years including multiple terms on the Weston Select Board and School Committee.

Rev. Andrew Harris is a member of the Bearing Witness organizing team and pastor at the United Church of Christ, Congregational, in Burlington. Bearing Witness is a group committed to peaceful, nonviolent standouts in front of the ICE Detention Center. Kelly Henderson is on several teams within FUERZA, a neighborhood watch committed to supporting immigrant neighbors in Waltham. Prof. Carrie Preston, a Weston resident, is Chair of the Department of English and the Associate Director of the Center on Forced Displacement at Boston University. Her research and teaching interests include border and critical forced displacement studies.
Jeffrey Thielman, Esq. is the President and CEO of the International Institute of New England which creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement and pathways to citizenship. They provide family reunification, education, skills training, job placement and legal services. IINE’s work is critical to the growth of the region’s economy.

We are once again coming together to make family preparedness packets for our immigrant neighbors. These packets are distributed regionally by LUCE volunteers to alert immigrants of their rights and provide advice to help families prepare in case of an emergency.

Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities.
A broad coalition of groups across the country is calling for a coordinated Ice Out For Good actions on Friday, January 23rd in solidarity for Minnesota, and to demand accountability, honor the life lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions.

Our featured speaker is State Representative Vanna Howard, who we have endorsed for State Senate in the special election primary on February 3rd. She came to the United States at 11 years old, after surviving a communist genocide. She lost her dad, three siblings, and grandparents, and faced homelessness, hunger, and domestic violence, but this community got her through it.
She has dedicated her life to giving back. From working for Congresswoman Niki Tsongas helping constituents in Lowell, Dracut, Pepperell, Tyngsborough, and Dunstable, to serving in the District Attorney’s Office, and volunteering with more than 50 nonprofits. As State Representative, she has secured millions to combat the housing crisis, strengthen childcare, and make our community safer.
