Zero Waste? The Story of Our Trash

August 26, 2025 @ 5:00 pm 6:00 pm EDT

Many people and communities aspire to a zero-waste goal. Yet, in recent years, news reports have left many folks cynical about what actually happens to our trash. Are there facilities for recycling here in New England? Or does it get sent overseas or even incinerated? Is composting making a difference for food waste? What about commercial pick-up from Acton’s apartment buildings and condo associations? Have Acton residents succeeded in reducing their portion of trash in our municipal solid refuse? Has the plastic bag ban been a success?

Join Lauren West, Environmental Analyst for the Acton Sustainability Office, as she outlines what happens to waste here in Acton and as she looks regional/national trends.

This is also an event to celebrate the new outdoor classroom at the Sustainability Office’s “Red House,” 468 Main Street, next to Town Hall. Please park at Town Hall and follow the signs along the walkway and across Woodbury Lane to the Red House. Munchies and cool beverages will be served in low-waste style!!

EnergizeActon.org is a joint effort of the Acton Climate Coalition and the Town of Acton Sustainability Office. Interested in lending a skill? Contact us HERE. We meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month.

The 14th Amendment- with historian Dr. Bob Forrant

September 22, 2025 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm EDT

What is this amendment in the news a lot lately? Why does it exist? What, exactly, does it do? Why are the federal courts weighing in on the amendment? Why is the president of the United States trying to get rid of the amendment to the Constitution via an Executive Order? Can a president with the stroke of a pen alter the Constitution that way? All these questions and many more will be answered on the 22nd. Join State Rep. Vanna Howard and UML Professor Dr. Bob Forrant for a talk on the legal history, current rulings and at what’s at stake.

Prayers for Liberty Walk-Lexington to Boston

September 1, 2025 @ 9:00 am 5:00 pm EDT

Dear Massachusetts Residents of All Faiths:

We are writing to you with an invitation to pray with your feet and march with us from Lexington to Boston this Labor Day to sound the alarm for American democracy and to demand a more just and humane democracy that honors our shared sacred values.

On Friday, May 30th, hundreds of us marched this same route from Lexington to Boston, reversing Paul Revere’s ride for liberty 250 years ago to sound the alarm for democracy, as the actions of our current presidential administration regularly violate our shared sacred values and our constitutional rights.

What does the schedule look like on Monday, September 1st?

9:00 a.m. Hancock Church – parking, gathering, greeting

9:15 a.m. Opening prayer on Lexington Battle Green

9:45 a.m. Walk from Lexington to Arlington (~5.3 miles)

12:00 p.m. Prayer in Arlington Center – The lawn at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Arlington

12:30  Walk to Cambridge Commons (~3.5 Miles)

2:30 Prayer in Cambridge Center – Cambridge Commons

3:00 Walk to Boston Commons – 3.1 to 3.2 miles

5:00 Boston Prayer and Rally at the Common – Embrace Statue or Common Bandstand

Can I use my clothing, signage, and speech to protest other offenses at this event?

While we respect the conscience, speech, and liberty of all our clergy and other participants, at this event we are focused on the preservation of our shared sacred values and democratic, constitutional governance. In our prayers and signage, we ask that participants not mention any other issues, however important they are to one’s conscience or community.

Raise UP MA Messaging Briefing

Virtual Event

August 21, 2025 @ 5:30 pm 6:30 pm EDT

Massachusetts is facing a great threat. The threat? Massive cuts to healthcare, food assistance programs, and education (to fund Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations). Our solution? We can protect our care with Mass. Corporate Fair Share and the use of state reserves. The next step in our advocacy is a series of regional town halls (Protect Our Care Town Hall: Stop the Cuts w/ Corporate Fair Share) coming to a region near you this fall! Want to know more about how to talk about the upcoming budget cuts, Mass. Corporate Fair Share, and reserves before then? Join us for a messaging briefing hosted by Raise Up Massachusetts on Thursday, August 21st @ 5:30PM to learn more!

Solidarity Lowell August Meeting

Hybrid Event

August 24, 2025 @ 5:30 pm 7:30 pm EDT

This is a hybrid meeting. Join us in person at UCC Dracut, 10 Arlington Street, Dracut, MA. or join us on Zoom.

Our featured speaker is Bryan Winter from Mass 50501. Bryan C. Winter is a Veteran of the US Army, having retired in 2003 after participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is now a speaker and the Lead Ambassador for Mass 50501, a non-violent, non-partisan, anti-authoritarian movement made up of ordinary citizens. He will speak about the importance of building networks of mutual aid and information-sharing across the broader movement as a strategy for coalition building. We will need the largest possible tent to hold the administration accountable for its crimes, and it is vital that we establish those relationships across partisan, religious, ethnic, and political divides now.

We hope to see you on Sunday!
