Massachusetts Senate Race:  September 1st Election

A very important race is happening under the radar in Massachusetts.   The choice this year is in the Democratic primary and the two front runners are Ed Markey and Seth Moulton.  Make your choice by September 1st!  It is important to choose carefully because the primary winner will likely win in November.  Markey and Moulton are both Democrats, and agree on many things.  Let’s look at how they differ.

Seth Moulton’s youtube ads lean heavily on the idea of youth being an advantage.  But age should not be our first criteria.  Younger candidates are not automatically more concerned about protecting people’s finances, civil rights, privacy rights, or health.  Jonathan Cohn, Director of Progressive Mass, has been carefully tracking the voting record of these two candidates – and he brings the receipts in his article “MA Elects Fighters to the US Senate.  So What does Seth Moulton Fight For? Please check out the article for more examples.  Here are three excerpts:

“Seth Moulton opposes Medicare for All, tuition-free public higher education, a nationwide just cause eviction standard, and rent stabilization. Markey is on record in support of all of them…”

In the House, “Seth Moulton has repeatedly voted to undermine financial regulations and weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to increase the profits of scam artists and predatory lenders at all of our expense.”  In the Senate, Ed Markey has been a leading advocate for consumer protection focusing on aviation charges, digital privacy, and limiting corporate overreach.

“Seth Moulton has repeatedly voted to undermine regulations of the cryptocurrency industry, increasing the likelihood of everyday people being subjected to scams and the economy as a whole to risk so that billionaires can make more profit…This is a contrast with Markey, who has stood up for consumer protection and financial stability.”

In contrast, Markey is championed by Sunrise, the nation’s largest  youth-led climate group,  and Voters of Tomorrow, the country’s leading Gen Z political organization.  Senator Markey has “a decades-long record of standing with young people in the fights that matter most – from co-authoring the Green New Deal and championing a livable planet amid this climate crisis, to defending access to affordable health care, to standing up to Donald Trump and MAGA extremism in the Senate.” (full endorsement)

Markey is endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, who cite his  defense of LGBTQ rights, reproductive freedom, and civil rights – and his leadership in the fight against an unprecedented MAGA Republican assault on all three fronts. “Ed Markey is a proven champion for equality who has never wavered in the fight to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” said Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign.  He continues to fight for legislation to ensure women’s health and the right to contraception, and to call out MAGA attacks on these rights through Medicare and Medicaid regulations.  (full endorsement)
