Call or Write: No New Prisons

The Legislature passed No Cost Calls (H.1796S.1494) and the Prison Moratorium (H.1795S.1979) last session, however they decided not to override Baker’s veto.

It’s a disgrace, because the moratorium would have stopped our hard earned tax dollars from funding and filling unneeded prisons.

A $50 million new prison will just beg to be filled with:

  • unconvicted, poor people who can’t afford bail
  • long serving, elderly people needing medical release
  • people of color who are disproportionately targeted at all levels in our criminal system

Now let’s build on last session’s success to pass this legislation again. It starts with getting our new democratic Governor on board – she hasn’t promised to support the prison moratorium.
