Not a miracle, just the same characteristics of our other Blue Wave victories: a superior Democratic candidate versus a callous Republican candidate and good old-fashioned hard work from volunteers on the ground.
In an October 20 press release, Scott’s campaign outlined the success of his race. “In case you missed it, the Cook Political Report, one of the race handicappers Washington watches most closely, today upgraded Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race “on the board,” moving it from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican.” Cook’s Jessica Taylor lays out why: District Attorney Scott Colom has run a strong campaign, whereas incumbent Hyde-Smith has a history of running behind. Republicans worry she will “again underperform the partisan baseline.” Compounding their concerns,. Hyde-Smith’s advice to pick another protein when beef prices are soaring, Taylor writes, is “hardly a welcome message in the carnivorous deep South.”
Another factor in Cook’s changed rating is that “… Colom outraised Hyde-Smith more than two to one in the third quarter. The Daily Beast reported that Hyde-Smith has taken donations from the power company at the center of Mississippi’s data center expansion, and that an AI-linked group spent nearly half a million dollars to support her reelection. That comes as Mississippi voters oppose more data centers nearly two to one.”
Mississippi continues to count mail in and provisional ballots, and at this moment, Scott Colom now leads by less than 2,000. Mississippi does not have an automatic recount law, so it remains to be seen if there will be a court challenge.
Donations are needed to fund any challenges, and Vopro Pros needs volunteers to help cure ballots. Let’s get this Senate seat over the finish line!
