Get Energized to Forge a Coup-proof Victory!

Updated 6/12/22: Christine and Barbara attended a strategy session by Focus 4 Democracy. We were pleased that this group has also endorsed the States Project! These seats, which are helped with relatively small amounts of money, are crucial to protecting civil rights and election integrity. Importantly, The States Project gives more than money to candidates – they help them with messaging and strategy. So often candidates for state offices have no access to expertise. This helps them make the best use of their money. Used the button below to find out more and donate.

By Christine Brown 2/1/22

Last month, the Senate failed to pass federal voting rights when 50 Republicans and 2 Democrats voted against them.  The Atlantic states one success however: we changed the conventional wisdom about the filibuster (Read here).  Shaw and I have often said that it is easier to get good people in office than to lobby the electeds who have a vested interest in the status quo.

Right now many of us are working hard on the 2022 elections to protect and expand our majorities in the House and Senate.  This is important work and must be done.

But let’s think ahead to 2024 for a moment.

The disgraced ex-president’s coup attempt only failed because people at all levels, but especially the state and local levels, refused to break the rules.  And the radical Republican party is now going all in to either change those rules or replace those people or both.

The essential role of State Legislatures/Melissa Walker (callin.com)

Here’s a challenge for you.  We can’t let the radical right demoralize us into inaction.  There are 40 weeks until the election.  We WON 2020 by choosing an action every week and following through.

So, while we fight for Congress, we must also devote some time and energy to the states.  The good news is that small amounts of money and an influx of volunteers can make a big difference in these races.  Everything we do now is also an investment for a coup-proof victory in 2024.

From Robert Hubell’s 1/24/22 newsletter: “For example, if Democrats can flip just two seats each in the Arizona Senate and House in 2022, they will gain control of state government in a critical swing state going into 2024. The amount of money necessary to swing a state election is a fraction of the amount of money necessary to flip a U.S. Senate seat or competitive House seat.”

TurnPurple2Blue.org has a lot of great ideas on how to support Democrats in state elections.  Because one size never fits all, here’s another good one:
Listen to Hubbell’s interview with Melissa Walker, Director of Giving Circles for The States Project. The full interview is here: Today’s Edition Podcast, The States Project interview with Melissa Walker. Here’s a description: “The States Project is dedicated to flipping control at the state level in legislatures and governorships. The model of The States Project is for volunteers to form a circle of friends who join together to support specific races in “target” states. Strategic investments of small amounts of money can yield tremendous swings in political power at the state level.”

He suggests “ (to)… join with a group of friends, educate yourselves about a race, and set a collective goal for giving to a race. Indeed, if you join with a few friends to create a giving circle, it will be fun, rewarding, and educational.”

Thank you for working so hard the last five years. Pat yourself on the back for what we did accomplish- we overcame a coup attempt to win the Presidency and the Senate!

If you’re tired, take this inspiration from Melissa Walker:

“This is the first moment in my life where I feel like I will spend the rest of my life tending to democracy in a way that I didn’t know was necessary.”

For right now, I tell myself that I can’t get tired and I won’t get tired . . . I think about how tired the civil rights leaders must have been after being beaten and waking up in hospital beds and facing that darkness . . . and I know that if those folks kept going, who am I not to keep going . . . “

Listen to Melissa’s inspiring two-minute closing remarks in her own voice, here: “I will spend the rest of my life tending to democracy / Melissa Walker.”

Give No Ground

Update: June 12, 2022 Yes, Give No Ground is still going strong! Here’s the latest Politico article. Indivisible has been busy supporting local groups fight GOP extremism. Our donations strategically support our sister chapters to defend important seats. Plus Indivisible is organizing phone banks!

Update: January 19, 2022: Sen. Mark Kelly- AZ has been added to Give No Ground after his support for the filibuster carveout!

by Christine Brown, January 5, 2022

People ask me all the time 1) What is Indivisible National doing for the Midterms? 2) How can we help in other states before the primaries?

Both are excellent questions- we all know that early money and support are crucial for candidates to win. And I hope you know that YOU are Indivisible, one of the many members nationwide that gives this organization strength and power.

I’m excited to announce that Indivisible’s latest initiative “Give NO Ground,” will fight for our slim majorities in the House and the Senate. They don’t agree with the “accepted wisdom” in the media that Democrats will lose the midterms. Together we already beat an attempted coup by working for THE LANDSLIDE and flipped the Senate by electing Black and Jewish Senators from Georgia in a run-off election. So, if we can do that, WE CAN DO THIS.

Give NO Ground” will protect incumbent Senator Warnock and seven other inumbent House members: Katie Porter (CA-45), Mike Leven (CA-49), Lucy McBath (GA-06), Lauren Underwood (IL-15), Andy Kim (NJ-03), and Matt Cartwright (PA-08). These legislators have been working hard for an inclusive recovery – and the MAGAs will be running nasty campaigns against them. CNN and Forbes breathlessly report that Progressives aren’t nutjobs after all and will support incumbent democrats (I’m paraphrasing…).

How will we win? Indivisible is using an “all of the above” strategy- phonebanking, texting, writing, door knocking, town halls, national advertising etc. Donations to this program will fund a rapid reponse fund to get action where it is needed, when it is needed. I’m super excited about their plan to connect Indivisibles in safe blue areas to these at risk seats in their “adopt-a-district” program. We will need to work hard, just as we did to defeat the former guy’s illegal actions. I personally can’t wait to get started.

Postcards- Other Actions

Looking for Postcards but don’t live near a pick up location TP2B offers? Here are some other ways to get postcards! (Choices added 5/6/22)

Activate America Pro-Choice Postcards to Voters: Support Senator Cortez Masto in Nevada Our first two Pro Choice postcard campaigns are in Nevada to support the re-election of Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, and in California to support Congresswoman Katie Porter, both champions for reproductive rights and women’s health. Mail postcards as you complete them, ideally within 2 weeks; last date to mail postcards for Cortez Masto is June 6 and for Porter May 29.

Activate America Write friendly cards that urge  voters to sign up to vote by mail, and direct them to a website where they can sign up. Voting by mail boosts voter turnout, because it tears down barriers to voting and gives voters more flexibility on when they vote. Voting by mail can prevent missing  an election due to bad weather, sickness or unforeseen circumstances. When voters elect to vote-by-mail, it gives us an extended period to follow up and urge voters to return their ballot. We are currently writing these cards to Wisconsin. Continuous distribution, no hard deadline. Mail postcards as you complete them, within 2-3 weeks

Nationwide: Turn PA Blue offers postcards for voters in Pennsylvania. The voting laws have been changing often and it’s hard for voters to keep track. Now they have to apply for a mail/absentee ballot each year. There is sure to be other changes as Republicans restrict voting. They provide postcards and addresses. You provide the stamps and the volunteer touch! Sign up for the postcard store here.

Nationwide: Vote Forward volunteers send heartfelt handwritten letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters encouraging them to participate in our democracy. The letters have been shown to significantly boost voter turnout.  You will need a printer, #10 envelopes, and first class stamps ($0.58) for this project.

Buy your own supplies:

POSTCARDS: If you are getting your addresses on line, you will need to buy your own supplies. We recommend choosing cards that have the entire back as a blank space to write on. Please support Postcards to Voters by purchasing their high quality postcards here. 50% of the proceeds go to support Postcards to Voters. (Getting addresses lists and distributing them to writers costs money). Or support Artist-Entrepreneurs at Etsy here. Get cards quick from Amazon here.

STAMPS: Don’t want to stand in line at the Post Office? You can buy postcards stamps ($0.40 each) online here and they will be delivered to your home. Cost is increasing to 44 cents July 1st, consider ordering in advance! (They are forever postcard stamps)

HARD WORK PAYS OFF:  SUCCESS IN WISCONSIN!

Late last year, we did a postcard campaign to WI through Activate America. We were touting the accomplishments of the Dems with the Infrastructure bill. It was a longish script and a bit of a slog.

But you know what? It worked!!!

Last month, there was a minor election in WI  – the type that no one usually pays any attention to, and turnout is always low.  But the turnout among Dem voters was remarkably high! All the work we have collectively done for WI really paid off! Republicans expected a red wave that never materialized. Instead, Dems prevailed in over half the races, which also produced Milwaukee’s first elected Black mayor.

Also good news is the fact that if these voters turned out for a minor election, they will certainly vote again this November, when the US House and Senate are on the line. With an off-year election, turnout is everything.  And turnout is something we know how to do!

Thanks to all of you who participated in this WI campaign, and I hope it will encourage others of you to write, write, WRITE! It matters, and it works!!

Galvanize Wisconsin

We are partnering with Swing Blue Alliance to help Galvanize Action connect with women voters ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.  Research has proven how powerful it is for a voter to receive postcards with a handwritten note, which is where you come in.

Meeting Voters at their Values

We don’t have to look much further back than the 2021 Governor’s race in Virginia to know just how powerful Critical Race Theory (CRT) is in dividing voters.  White women voters particularly are being bombarded with messages about CRT that are designed to trigger fear which has increased their anxiety, particularly among women with sons and those residing in the suburbs.

This meme was designed and tested to encourage moderate white women voters toward supporting schools having open and honest conversations about the ongoing effects of race and discrimination. By using a military figure as the messenger, we are appealing to the voters’ patriotism and respect for authority -key values of these Americans.  The message centers voters’ in-group care by focusing on their son, essentially flipping the script  that white mothers need to fear that their sons will be disadvantaged by conversations about race.  This meme makes the case that talking about challenging topics is an act of bravery that protects everyone.  And by using an image that looks directly at the view, we are tapping into the neuroscience techniques that increase our empathy and connection to the messenger.

Prochoice postcards to AZ for Sen. Mark Kelly

The Supreme Court blindsided us with its intention to overturn Roe v. Wade. Such a reversal would set us back 50 years in our fight for reproductive rights. It also sets us up to lose other basic rights, including the right to make our own healthcare decisions and to control our own sexuality.

The Supreme Court cannot themselves make laws, so it is essential that we elect and support prochoice legislators! US Senator from Arizona, Mark Kelly, whose re-election bid is under GOP attack, is a prochoice advocate who needs our strongest support.

Please participate in our new prochoice postcard project from Activate America!

Details:

  • Mailing date is 2 weeks after receipt of your postcards (no later than July 6, when Early Voting starts).
  • Packets contain 25 postcards, stamps, address sheets, and instructions.
  • Reimbursement is $15 per packet.

Here’s the actual script  (please do not change it):

Dear [First Name],

Abortion access is on the line if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Democrat Mark Kelly believes we all deserve to make decisions about our own healthcare, including contraception and abortion. Republicans disagree.

Vote to re-elect Senator Kelly! Early voting starts July 6.

Thanks, [Your First Name}, volunteer

Will the decimation of Women’s Rights finally wake up Americans?

Christine Brown, May 5, 2022 (updated May 17)

Steven Cobert takes down the radical Scotus

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor would reportedly write in his diary, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”

WE ARE THE SLEEPING GIANT.

All your family and friends “who don’t do politics”
All your family and friends “who think Democrats and Republicans are the same”
All your family and friends “who don’t have time to pay attention and/or vote”
All your family and friends “who think their vote doesn’t matter”
All your family and friends “who spend hours battling on social media” (but don’t do anything else)
All your family and friends “who think someone else will do something”

I get it, I really do.  We have to get the kids to school, the laundry done, and earn a paycheck to pay for housing and food. Sometimes we want to do zumba and garden and forget for just a moment the dire circumstances we face in our country.  I personally am in this fight for my children and future grandchildren.

How Americans Really Feel about Abortion, Forbes 5/3/22  There is broad concensus about the right to abortion.

The bottom-line is that there is a minority war on the majority and SCOTUS  just dropped a bomb.  And like Pearl Harbor, I fervently hope that it will awaken Americans out of their complacency.  Read How Americans Really Feel about Abortion and you will see that it has broad support.  Unfortunately the media’s both-sides reporting amplifies minority viewpoints so that they feel equally as strong- it’s a problem in all reporting from Climate Change to Healthcare and more.

The radical decision to eliminate a constitutional right enshrined for nearly 50 years is just the beginning.  You know what other rights are based on the same legal reasoning?  Marriage Equality.  Homosexual Sex. Contraceptive Access.  Interracial Marriage.  The SCOTUS assurances that these rights won’t be affected are the exact same lies that these judges told about their belief in ROE’s precedent.

Robert Hubbell The Hard Road Forward, May 4, 2022

Robert Hubbell states that “The opinion is grotesquely disingenuous, pretending that the Court is merely “correcting” a wrongly decided case. Not so. The Court knows its ruling will result in the immediate revocation of an existing constitutional right in more than two dozen states.  Moreover, Alito’s logic is perverse and cruel. He claims that an implied right cannot exist unless it is “deeply rooted in the nation’s history and tradition,” but he ignores the fact that for the first 129 years of our nation’s history, women were denied the right to vote—and thus denied any realistic opportunity to create a “deeply rooted tradition” permitting contraception and abortion. Under Alito’s backward logic, a right plainly implied in the Constitution cannot exist because white male legislators successfully suppressed that right for more than a century.”

I highly recommend Robert Hubbell’s free newsletter, please read this one in its entirety.  He ends the Hard Road Forward with:

“The only path forward is the hard path—it is the one that the Constitution grants us: the ballot box. Even as the Court turns its back on the Constitution, we must embrace it ever more fiercely. The Constitution will endure, and its faithful servants will prevail.”

Heather Cox Richardson, Letters from an American, May 3, 2022

In her May 3rd newsletter, Heather Cox Richardson continues to bring an important historical context to our struggle to maintain our civil rights.  No one really cared about abortion until Reagan needed votes from the evangelicals to win. Her source notes at the end of her letters are a good way to get free content.  Her free newsletter is an important source of knowledge, which gives us strength to fight.

We CANNOT cede the Midterms.  We need to work as hard as we did for Biden to:

  1. Protect and Expand our Senate majority.
  2. Protect and Expand our House majority.

Both are razor thin. It is tradition that the opposition party’s base is more energized to turn out in the midterms.  But we are entering a new era where historical norms are trampled.

We can’t wait for someone else to do it.

The time is now.  DONATE. PHONE. TEXT. WRITE.  A great place to start is the states who have their primaries this month.

Most importantly: talk to the people you know.  There are people who seriously don’t know what is happening. They think they are protecting themselves by not getting involved, but the opposite is true.
