DE-ICE Citizens Bank- Why and How

Why Protest Citizen’s Bank?

To accommodate the planned increase in immigration detention capacity to at least 100,000 beds, notorious private prison giants CoreCivic and The GEO Group will have to undertake construction and renovation projects. These projects will require significant capital, but most of their lenders have already cut ties with the two companies.

Citizens Bank has instead deepened its financial ties to CoreCivic and The GEO Group, while continuing to tell its customers that it’s “committed to strengthening our communities.”

The following SEC filings demonstrate a relationship between Citizens Bank and GEO Group/CoreCivic. They don’t represent the full extent of these relationships.

CoreCivic and The GEO Group have faced a mountain of allegations including forced labor, wrongful deaths due to understaffing and medical neglect, securities fraud, and more. Now they are helping the administration enact immigration policies that are hurting families and endangering our fundamental rights to due process and freedom of speech.

The mass detention, deportation, and surveillance of immigrant communities are a stain on our country’s history. The GEO Group, CoreCivic, and the banks that finance them are all complicit. Citizens must pledge to cut ties with CoreCivic and The GEO Group.

Justice 4 All Thursdays

April 9 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm EDT

Greater Assabet Indivisible Network (GAIN) invites you to stand in solidarity with immigrants and resistance to ICE and their cruel and lawless detention of our neighbors Thursdays from 11am-1pm. Regardless of any other political views, you are welcome to join us and demand Justice 4 All so long as you do so non-violently.

Our friends at Bearing Witness have been hosting gatherings at this location for many weeks. We are an unaffiliated group, but very much aligned with their values and mission. Our goal is to add to the total number of hours that citizens stand in non-violent opposition to the deplorable detainment conditions at this location. If you have been to Bearing Witness on Wednesdays, we would love to have you at Justice 4 All Thursdays.

What happens at this ICE office?

ICE personnel depart from District Ave. in unmarked vans with tinted windows on missions to abduct immigrants across New England. Immigrants may also show up at the office for appointments. The facility on District Ave was never intended to be a detention center, yet immigration lawyers and media interviews reveal that people are now being housed here in conditions that have been called “abysmal” and “unsanitary.”

What to expect at Justice 4 All?

We are committed to nonviolence, and we stand peacefully with signs outside the facility. We do not block the entrance, we do not physically approach ICE agents as they walk to/from the parking lot, and we do not block traffic on District Ave.

Signs

This is a very targeted action outside the ICE facility, so it’s not the venue for protesting other causes. Even though we care deeply about other issues, while outside ICE we must remain focused on immigration.

Parking and other tips

For those with mobility challenges, please keep in mind that the lots closest to ICE — the FAA lot beside ICE and the BAE Systems lot directly across the street from ICE — have both been blocked off. There are restaurants nearby (Clover, Pressed Cafe, Chipotle) to get food and use the bathroom.

Before arriving, please consider your own self-preservation (citizenship status) and self-care (sunscreen, hydration, etc.).

If you would like to receive updates on Justice4All Thursdays and reminders of our events, please add your email below to join our list. We’re excited to reinforce the work of our friends at Bearing Witness and to support our immigrant neighbors. We hope that you will join us.

See you in Burlington!

De-ICE Hanscom Friday Standouts

April 10 @ 1:30 pm 3:00 pm EDT

Now that it is Spring, we are back to our regular hours! This weekly afternoon standout is on Fridays from 1:30 to 3:00 at the Hanscom Rotary (intersection of Hanscom Dr. and Old Bedford Rd. in Lincoln, MA.) Please park along Old Bedford Road or Hanscom Drive without impeding traffic or blocking bike lanes.

De-ICE Hanscom is a coalition organizing peaceful standouts with the goal of eliminating ICE transport flights from Hanscom Field. ICE is using these flights to swiftly move immigrants out of New England in order to hinder effective legal representation.

Coalition groups include Boston Workers Circle, Concord Indivisible, Greater Assabet Indivisible Network (GAIN), Indivisible Acton Area, Jewish Alliance for Law & Social Action (JALSA), Lexington Alarm, and Maynard Indivisible.

Sign up to get information and updates about our weekly standouts. We’ll keep you in the loop if we need to reschedule or cancel for weather or other considerations, and apprise you of our goals and progress.
